Old Woman Range – treat for trail riders

HeliBike’s original trip, the Old Woman Range, is a favourite with trail riders.  Enjoy the views as we heli out over the Remarkables and remote Nevis Valley before landing at 1700m on the rocky moonscape of the Old Woman Range.  Then it’s down – with a bit of up – via a mix of undulating slopes, fast flowy trails and technical single track. If there’s time we’ll finish at a café in the heart of Central Otago’s Pinot Noir country, Gibbston Valley.

The Remarkables Double Descent – twice the fun!

Not your average shuttle day, this ride includes two helicopter fights and a massive 2900m descent.

Our first flight of the day lands at over 1800m in the Remarkables Ranges – New Zealand’s highest mountain biking (for the hardcore we can even go higher for some super technical rock garden). Then get ready for 15km of down through rock garden trails and open alpine tundra only experienced at high altitude.

Flight number two takes us up to Crown Peak, where you’ll soak in the 360deg views out over Wanaka and Queenstown. Then depending on your skill level – we’ll head down via steep technical ridgeline single-track and tussock or rutty 4WD and water race track. The ride ends – after stunning single-track built by miners 150 years ago - in Arrowtown at the bottom of the iconic Tobins Track.

The Nevis Double Down

Explore the Doolans and Horn ranges by bike with a half-day trip that includes two spectacular helicopter flights and 2000 vertical metres of stunning downhill.

Fly from Gibbston Valley and land atop Doolans Spur to begin the first down of the day. If we’re lucky, there’ll be patches of snow to really test our skills, before a mix of rocky trails and alpine snowgrass down to Doolans creek. Here we’ll meet the heli for our second flight of the day, up to the Horn Range above the Nevis Valley. Check out a historic musterer’s hut and epic views then hang on for the rocky descent (with some up) down to the valley floor. Or – if you’re up for some extra pedalling – we can ‘enduro-ify’ this ride by extending it with some more up and down.

At the bottom, the HeliBike NZ Land Rover Defender will shuttle us up to the iconic AJ Hackett Bungy Nevis site where, if you choose, you can Bungy, Swing or Catapult or do all three!

Enroute home we’ll drop into one of Gibbston’s eateries for well-earned refreshments.

Crown Peak – short and sweet

A short but oh so sweet flight to the top of Crown Peak will see you taking in the expansive 360-degree views of Queenstown, Wanaka and beyond. With two descent options on offer from the top, this is a great ride for a mix of intermediate and advanced/expert riders.

The advanced/expert rider will drop in through high narrow ridgelines and head ‘off- piste’ on tussock while the intermediate rider let’s loose on the nearby rough 4X4 tracks.

The group will get back together for the fast and furious descent off Crown Terrace and down to the gold mining village of Arrowtown – with a choice at the end of Tobin’s 4WD track or Murphy’s Run single track.

Vanguard Peak – historic single track

Our Vanguard Peak ride is rich with gold mining history – and epic single track! The heli views enroute to the alpine top will blow your mind. Then its down kilometres of single track – hand crafted by the gold miners  – to historic Macetown.

Check out some gold mining relics then ride the narrow, exposed trails and 4WD track on to the gold rush village of Arrowtown. If there’s time, we’ll enjoy a cold ale before returning to Queenstown.

Dunstan Mountains – big back country

One for the fit intermediate and advanced riders, the Dunstan Mountain trails offer the perfect mix of super-fast, narrow farm and sheep track and 150 year old gold miners trails.

Our longest heli flight at 20 minutes, will deliver us into the heart of big backcountry for some huge descents and stunning views. Bring your camera!

We’ll head down through an area rich with history to Devil’s Creek via sheep tracks, off-piste open scree slopes and old water races.  A few short (but sweet) climbs will get your heart racing – if the downhill hasn’t already.  The shuttle will meet us on the banks of Lake Dunstan – where we can swim, rock jump and enjoy something cold - before a scenic drive back to Queenstown.
